Glazier
Work Description:
Glaziers put the glitter and gleam in today’s buildings. They cut, fabricate and install glass and metal glass-holding window products, including aluminum doors, storefronts, curtainwalls and skylights. Glaziers must be skilled in cutting, handling and setting all types of glass, mirrors and structural glass from ground level to great heights. They must be knowledgeable about chemicals, primers and sealants they use to water-seal the frames and glass they install. Glaziers must work together as a team and follow safety rules to protect themselves from injuries and cuts.
Apprentice Age:
Minimum: 18 years
Maximum: None
Training Program:
Glazier apprentices receive four years of training by skilled journey-level glazing instructors, along with technical adult education classes in the evenings covering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, back injury prevention, blueprint reading, welding, glass handling and cutting, shop fabrication, scaffold and swing stage set-up, and much more. Advancement is based on each 842.5 hours worked and training received for each six-month period.
Application Process:
Applications are accepted, in person, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (except holidays) and are kept on active file for five years. Based on industry needs anticipated by the apprenticeship committee, applicants are tested and selected by a scoring process based on math skills, general aptitude and an oral interview. A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
